Five Lakes Hiking Week in East Tyrol – guided walking with hotel comfort

Five valleys, beautiful mountain lakes and the comfort of returning to the same hotel every evening: this guided hiking week combines the mountains of East Tyrol with varied day walks, local knowledge and a comfortable base in Lienz.

Hiking in East Tyrol – Hohe Tauern National Park, Villgraten Valley and Lienz

The Five Lakes Week explores selected mountain lakes on five hiking days. Most walks take place in Hohe Tauern National Park, with another day in the traditional Villgraten Valley. Alpine pastures, clear lakes, broad mountain views and East Tyrolean culture shape the programme. Lienz remains the base throughout the week, so there is no need to change accommodation after each hike.

Itinerary – five hiking days

MON: Laserzsee – Dolomite backdrop
↑ ca. 700 Hm | Walking time: ca. 5 Std.

We begin our week above Lienz; right from the start, we’ll enjoy the impressive rocky scenery of the Lienz Dolomites: from the spectacularly situated Dolomitenhütte, our walk leads steadily uphill to the Karlsbader Hütte (2,260 m). Just behind it lies the idyllic, turquoise-coloured Lake Laserz. For the return journey, we can also take the gentle tarmac road.

DI: Grünsee und Schwarzsee - Venedigerblick
↑ ca. 700 Hm | Walking time: approx. 5,5 Std.

This stage is one of the most beautiful in the whole of East Tyrol: from the Felbertauern South Portal, we hike to the Grünsee and then on to the Schwarzsee, which is indeed darker in colour, right in the heart of the unspoilt high-mountain landscape of the Hohe Tauern National Park. Along the way, we’ll enjoy the impressive view of the Großvenediger.

MI: Dorfersee - in Kals am Großglockner
↑ ca. 470 Hm | Distance 17,4 km | Walking time: approx. 6 Std.

A long but comparatively gentle hike takes us from Kals am Großglockner through the wild Dabaklamm gorge and the wide, historic Dorfertal valley with its alpine pastures to the secluded, emerald-green Kalser Dorfersee. A special day on which we’ll learn a great deal about the history of the Hohe Tauern National Park.

DO: Obersee mit Gipfelglück
↑ ca. 500 Hm | Walking time: approx. 4 Std.

We set off from the high-altitude Staller Sattel, right by the Obersee, for our short summit hike, where we’ll enjoy the magnificent panorama over the Defereggental valley, the Rieserferner Group and far into South Tyrol. Afterwards, we’ll of course take another stroll around the Obersee.

FR: Winklerner Almsee & Straßkopf
↑ ca. 570 Hm | ↓ ca. 570 Hm | Walking time: approx. 4,5 Std.

A fitting end to our week of hiking: from the Roaner Alm car park, we’ll hike across gentle alpine meadows to the idyllic Winklerner Almsee. We’ll then continue on to the Straßkopf. The summit is technically straightforward but offers an exceptionally sweeping panorama: from the Hohe Tauern via the Schober Group to the Lienz Dolomites. We’ll head back via the Winklerner Alm.

Who is this hiking holiday for?

This week is designed for active leisure hikers with a solid basic level of fitness who walk regularly and enjoy varied natural trails. It is not a hut-to-hut trek: the fixed hotel in Lienz provides comfort and recovery every evening. The daily walks are nevertheless genuine mountain hikes rather than easy sightseeing walks.

Fitness
You should be comfortable walking for around 4 to 6 hours and be prepared for day hikes of up to roughly 800 metres of ascent. The published stages are around five to five and a half hours and reach approximately 800 metres of ascent and descent.

Technical level

Trails range from well-made mountain paths to narrower natural trails that can be rocky or rooty. Normal sure-footedness is required. The highest stated trail category is T2, and the organiser describes the routes as being without exposed fall-risk sections. Hiking at around 1,500 metres above sea level should not be completely new to you.
